About the Parent Survey

At Wayne State University (WSU) the Center for Urban Studies was asked by the Michigan Department of Education Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services to conduct a yearly survey of parents of Michigan students receiving special education services. The survey asks parents to give feedback on how well the schools help them be more involved in their child’s special education services. This feedback helps the State track whether or not they are reaching the target they have set for parental involvement (Indicator 8 of the State Performance Plan / Annual Performance Report).

Separate versions of the surveys are sent out to parents of preschool (children ages 3-5) and school age (children ages 6-26) students.

Each year the survey includes parents of all preschool students receiving special education throughout Michigan and parents of school age students in approximately 1/3 of the Local Education Agencies (LEAs), or local school districts, in the state. If a parent has two or more children receiving special education, one child is selected at random.
